What are the side effects and risks of hormone therapy (HT)?

The most common side effects of hormone therapy are minor, such as hot flashes and mood swings. These can be divided into two categories: those that affect women only (elevated cholesterol), or others present in both genders (such as weight gain). Severe complications resulting from hormonal changes very rarely occur but should always receive immediate attention if they do happen! The debate over which of these side effects are due to the estrogen component as opposed to progesterone has been ongoing for some time now.
